Farm Update – by Jen
I’ve been rather quiet on the newsletter end of things lately. Although this August has gone significantly smoother than previous years’, it tends to weigh us down, mentally and physically.
Greg and I are both nearing 50 (!) and we are starting to feel it! Luckily, we’ve got a good crew on board this year and it feels like the typical weight of August is more evenly distributed on multiple shoulders.
Miles has been great about keeping the veggies (and pigs) growing and doing the markets with us on the weekend.
Dimitrius has taken on the mantel of raising pastured chickens here, while still helping with veggie production and farm maintenance.
Jake has been a new gift to the farm – as he’s handy with fixing and running equipment! He also throws a hand in with maintenance, landscaping, veggie production, and barnyard escapades.
Punkee has been our pig lady – always there with bananas for pig snacks and a scrub brush to clean out water troughs. Linda, who’s been coming to the farm as a Workshare member for many years, is always willing to tackle the most tedious “weeding of small things”. You honestly won’t have carrots without her dedication! Mom (Kathy) and Dad (Allan) are still coming down on an every-other-week basis and make food for the Tuesday harvest crew and then help out at the farm stand on Wednesdays.
Then there’s Mary, what would we do without Mary? The greenhouse is her realm, but she’s proficient in almost all things here at the farm: from harvesting husk cherries, and wild mushroom foraging to keeping Olivia and Evelyn in line…. she can do it all (if we need her to!).
All this to say: we’ve got a solid crew and there’s more and more people stepping up to help or play a key role in the farm’s success. We don’t feel like we’re in the whirlwind of a gargantuan project all alone. People have our backs. It’s tangible!
Even our regular CSA customers who have stuck with us through the good and not-so-good years, know that this farming gig is a long game and you’ve got to be dedicated to knowing where your food comes from, and to supporting your local community (and economy) directly. Many of us have become old friends and we enjoy watching the little toddlers grow and head off to college! (Yes, we’ve been here that long!).
We have a following at the farmers market too. I know our sandwiches are really, really good. But I also think that our success is because our customers value what we do. We’re adamant about growing and cooking the best quality, hyper local, and tasty food we can find (or grow) – and the customers appreciate it and keep coming back!
After my short hiatus from writing newsletters in the midst of August, I just want to make sure, now that I’m back, that I shout out some appreciation to all our peeps. We wouldn’t be here without all of them (and you). This farm, our workers, our customers, our friends… it’s a whole ecosystem that works. So THANKS for doing your part. We notice and we appreciate you all!
