Field Notes

It seems as though we’re keeping up with things so far. We planted beans late last week, just before the rain came (good timing!). This week, we’ll put out the cucumbers and squash, and then prep the fields for tomatoes and tomatillos. The peppers were slow to germinate and grow in the greenhouse earlier this spring – so we’re watching them creep along now. In a couple of weeks, we’ll be able to get those little babies into the ground too.

Greg deserves a great big atta’ boy! With this stellar grant writing skills, and a little guidance from PennTAP (Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program), we qualified for a grant to replace our various, numerous, and mostly antiquated chest freezers with a brand-spankin’ new walk in freezer. This will nearly double our storage capacity and nearly halve our energy usage! We’re super pumped! It took a feat of will on our parts, by digging through old utility bills, placing and reading meters on all the old freezers, and determining the future energy usage of the new freezer. All with the goal of decrease our energy draw. That, along with using the solar panels as our main energy source, we’re excited to move up the energy-efficiency line.

It’s hard for small farms to have the surplus cash to purchase a new piece of equipment like this… and for many of us, we just keep cobbling together the resources we have. We’re so grateful for the grants (and the people who are working with Greg to make successful applications) that are coming our way…making our lives slightly easier and thus, more enjoyable!

On the other hand…. unloading this behemoth of a freezer from the delivery truck was a remarkable feat!
