Farm News

We had a great first run at the Ligonier Country Market. It’s a hike for us to get there and we need to be set up and ready by 8 am. We got the kids out of bed at the crack of dawn and were there and set up in time for the rush of customers! It was so fun to be at a bustling market – it made the time go by so quickly. In the future, we’ll do a round-robin, with me, Greg, and a couple of the farm employees – so we can take turns doing all the markets and leaving someone back at the farm to take care of things.

Greg and Miles fired up the grill at the farm to do a test run – just to make sure that all went smoothly!

If you’re a Ligonier customer – don’t forget that you can place an order and we’ll bring it down there for you. Of course, we’ll always be stocked with bacon and sausage, but some of the more unique cuts need to be ordered ahead.

The Northside market starts up this Friday 3 – 7 pm at the Allegheny Commons, in front of the hospital. Come hungry, as we’ll have the grill fired up and have a cooler full of frozen pork too!

Start of CSA – beginning in MAY

We’re aiming to start the CSA on the first week of June. Some crops haven’t cooperated (or more like the weather isn’t cooperating!). We have a nice stand of radishes, which have come on too early and are starting to split….. The spinach in the high tunnel has crapped out with the intense heat, and our beautiful stand of spinach in the field is starting to get pointy leaves and to send up flower stalks, marching its way toward bolting. We’ll do our best to keep it going until the first CSA.

I’ll send out personal emails to all of the half share members, letting you know when your first pick up begins. Half share folks will pick up on an every other week basis – making some of your odd shares (pick up on week #1) or even shares (pick up on week #2).

Chicks get an upgrade

In case you haven’t heard, we’re raising chickens again this year. We ordered 75 from the hatchery. So far, all is well. Dimitrius has spruced up the two chicken tractors. The chicks are growing so quickly, we had to separate the whole batch into two. In the video above, Dimitrius and Jake are putting the birds into their new pen. Wheee!
