Field Notes – by Jen

I just don’t know what to do with this weather. It’s actually been rather agreeable with being dry enough to till and plant crops. In year’s past, it is always muddy – making it hard to get spring crops in the ground. Well, now we’re hitting 85 degrees, we’ve got the irrigation out, and it’s only April. It feels like summer that ‘s come too early.

I just seeded a bunch of spring crops (that’s me with our trusty Planet Jr. Seeder. It’s 3 times faster than seeding by hand, as it plows, drops seed, and covers up the seeds all in one go!). There’s a second succession of spinach in between rows of sugar snap/snow peas.

The beds are prepped and we’re ready to get the broccoli, cabbages, and kales planted into the fields. Let’s cross our fingers that the bug pressure isn’t oppressive this year… this winter wasn’t very harsh – and there might be a few more insects that overwintered than would normally make it. But…who know. We just gotta keep on keepin’ on!

Got your gardening on?

Are you ready to fill up your garden?  Check out our section of available seedlings each week – the list will grow as more becomes available. These are all varieties of plants that we grow for our CSA. We select them for taste, regional vigor, and productivity. Currently, there’s kale, cabbages and lettuce up on the webstore. Soon we’ll have herbs and flowers. In May, we’ll get the tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos up on the site.

It’s not too late to join our CSA either!

The clock is ticking- and we expect our first CSA distribution to be around the first week in June. Sign up now so we can get you into our program!!
