Half Hogs!

We’ve opened up for Half Hog Orders! If you’re in the need to stock a freezer – this is the most economical way to go! We’ll help you sort out how to get the most of your money and maximize the use of the “whole (half) of a hog! Half hogs now available for $4.50/pound hanging weight, plus you’ll pay the custom butcher fee from Cunninghams Meats. Our half hogs usually weigh in at 100 – 130 pounds. Typically you’ll get about 90% of your cut weight back from the butcher if you receive the bones (5ish pounds), fat (15ish pounds) and organs, otherwise expect 70% of the hanging weight. Whoa…. have you seen the price of eggs lately?

For 70 cents more, you can buy our farm fresh (no older than a week!) eggs from free range chickens, who are fed a diet of verified nonGMO grains, veggie scraps, and any other goodies they can forage around the barnyard. Our only poultry crisis was that the hens take a hiatus over the winter and leave us longing for those golden yolked delicacies.

Rumor in the far right (ironically, the far left too….) farming network is that the government is poisoning the feed supply, making chickens infertile and that someone’s torching poultry houses, grain facilities, and blowing up fertilizer plants, limiting poultry (food) production capacity….

Whatever the reasons, there’s a supply and demand issue, and egg prices have skyrocketed. That’s clear. We don’t have an over-abundance of eggs and I’m not trying to push egg sales today. I’m just pointing out that this crazy food system is wacked and the only real answer to it all is to shop local. Grow your own or become friends with the people that do grow food, there’s precious few of us as it is right now anyway.

That leaves me with a conundrum. Comparatively, my eggs are woefully underpriced for what’s happening with the egg market right now. But I have a hard time creeping up my prices beyond the current price. Since 2020, our layer feed prices have risen by about a 3rd. But we only raised our price by $1.

Once the CSA starts up in June, we’ll limit our egg sales to CSA members only. So…. if you want to be a little more involved in locking in your food chain supply now – you should join our CSA. Currently, the CSA is set at 2022 prices. That ends on March 1! Join now!
